As a child, Martha Lorraine Lindenmayer lived in China and the Philippines, traveling with her Navy father. She had many stories of her adventures on ships. After living in several cities in California, the family settled in San Diego where she met Harold Jarvis at Scotts Memorial Baptist Church. Harold had moved out from Overton, Texas to work at grocery stores owned by distant cousins who had eloped from East Texas.
